5 Things About Arthritis that You Should be Aware of During Arthritis Awareness Month

    Last updated 5 days ago

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that leads to swelling and pain in the joints.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States and affects more than 50 million American adults and children.  This month, increase your awareness of this common disease by reading through these five important facts about arthritis.

    1. There are many different types of arthritis.  Arthritis is a term that encompasses many different forms of inflammatory joint disease.  In the United States, the most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, followed by gout, fibromyalgia, and rheumatoid arthritis.  Each has its own cause and requires a different approach to treatment.

    2. Obesity can put you at a higher risk.  Being overweight places a large amount of stress on the joints, especially on the hips and knees.  Over time, the protective cartilage in these joints can sustain wear and damage, eventually resulting in the pain and inflammation of arthritis.

    3. You can prevent arthritis.  Making healthy lifestyle choices, such as eating well, staying active, and maintaining a healthy weight, have been shown to reduce a person’s risk for developing some forms of arthritis.  Protecting your joints during rigorous physical activity can also help to prevent injuries that can lead to arthritis.  If you are at risk for this disease, ask your doctor how you can stay healthy and manage your risk factors.

    4. Physical activity reduces arthritis pain.  Whether it is walking, swimming, or jogging, getting regular exercise has been proven to reduce the symptoms of arthritis.  Physical activity can also promote weight loss, which is critical for taking unnecessary pressure off of damaged joints.

    5. There is no cure for arthritis.  Although there is no known cure for arthritis, the condition can be managed with the help of an experienced medical specialist.  Early diagnosis and treatment can help to prevent the progression of the disease and alleviate symptoms.
